Speaking with the BBC, James Tyne explained that he began feeling unwell. His eyes turned yellow and his hands and ankles became itchy all the time. He sought medical attention where a blood test diagnosed him with Stage 4 cancer in May.
"Literally, my life just flew through my brain in a second — my family, friends, dogs, holidays — everything had downloaded into my head in like a split-second," he explained.
Since then, he's been trying to make the most of his life while also raising awareness about pancreatic cancer. His wife explained that he's trying to stay positive. The whole family is.
"All you think of is: 'That's the bad cancer,'" Sarah said. "For me, personally, it's just been all about channeling all those emotions, all those feelings into something really proactive and positive, through raising awareness and fundraising."
Stage 4 Cancer
Things have been very scary and draining for the family.
"Obviously, it's been exhausting, it's been scary and emotional," she added. "It's like every sort of possible emotion you can think of — and then triple it by a million."
Meanwhile, the British man is continuing his fight against the deadly cancer. He recently underwent a second round of chemotherapy. He also said that doctors in America are gentically profiling his biopsy to learn more about how to treat the cancer.
He's fortunate that he had any symptoms at all. Often, there's no symptoms for pancreatic cancer until it is too late.
"It's a big, big percentage who have it who have their tumors elsewhere that present no symptoms, so when they find out they've got it, they're told they've got four to six weeks to live, which is an absolute tragedy," James told the BBC.
"We have heard it all being promoted, but with [this] cancer, get yourself checked out. If you've got any doubts, just get down to your GP," he continued.
