While out riding his bike, Robert 'Bobby' Cavanaugh, witnessed a man savagely beating a dog. He pulled over and tried to intervene, to stop the onslaught. However, according to his sister, when Robert 'Bobby' Cavanaugh, stepped in the way, he was attacked and beaten to death by the dog owner.
The attack happened on Christmas Eve, as Cavanaugh cycled around his mobile home community in Madison Heights, Michigan. After the attack, emergency services responded to the scene, but by this point, Cavanaugh was already unresponsive and bleeding.
He was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead. The attempt to save the dog had resulted in his own death.
Investigations Underway To The Identity Of Dog Attacker
There is now a GoFundMe opened for Robert 'Bobby' Cavanaugh. It makes a number of claims as to the identity of the man who beat him to death for protecting the dog. However, these, up until now, are unconfirmed and the case is still under investigation.
The GoFundMe claims that they know the attacker. "Bobby was beaten to death with a pipe this man is a repeated felon, and has been released from 2 different long-term prison sentences." However, this is still being investigated.
According to his sister, Bobby was a kindhearted man and well-loved in the community. "Bobby had a heart of gold and would do whatever he could to help the community in any way that he could and would never ask for a penny. He did everything from his heart. He was a man that loved the Lord and always gave back whenever he could, especially all animals."
His family wants to give him the burial he deserves rather than a cremation. But, these are not cheap. So, the GoFundMe has been set up to treat him the way they think he should be. His death while protecting a dog will be honored.
Originally, it set out to collect $4 thousand. However, at the time of writing, his heroic act has collected together over $26,000.
