As per FDNY, the incident took place on 1673 84th Street in Bensonhurst at around 10 a.m. There, the yet unidentified male suspect allegedly started attacking his victims. Among them are three children, reportedly girls, between the ages of 8 and 16. The suspect was eventually stopped by the NYPD, who shot him down.
One of the local Brooklyn neighbors, only identified as Maria, talked about the grisly scene she witnessed as she saw how children were left bloodied following the attack.
"I was watching through the window and the girl covered in blood came out," Maria told The Post. "And then there was another girl. The two girls were just covered in blood. I was shaking. I'm still shaking now. I don't usually see them. They just moved here. I lived here seven years and there are a lot of new people moving here."
Bloody Scene
Maria's recount of the events seems to align with pictures obtained and shared by the New York Post. In one photo, a female victim, possibly one of the girls Maria saw, was covered in blood. She was being led by emergency responders toward an ambulance.
The NYPD arrived at the scene following a 911 call. The outlet reports that police officers shot the suspect after he ignored orders to drop the knife he allegedly used to attack the victims. Moreover, sources add that the suspect even lunged at the officers with the knife. At that moment, the suspect was shot multiple times, sustaining life-threatening injuries.
Another photo shows a bare-chested man lying on a stretcher. It is believed that said man was the one responsible for the attack. Neighbor Humbert Huerta stated that the bare-chested man, reportedly the suspect, had been shot twice and was "probably 40 years old."
While the exact number of wounded individuals is currently unknown, The Post reported that all of them were rushed to Maimonides Medical Center. One of the victims, a child, is currently in critical condition. State Assemblyman Lester Chang said that one of the victims may be a babysitter. Reportedly, the mother of at least some of the children hurt was not at home during the incident.
