Police were chasing down a 40-year-old who was fleeing the scene of an investigation. As the male suspect attempted to evade law enforcement, he entered a swamp and was attacked by an alligator.
Why Was the Suspect Fleeing the Scene?
As reported by PEOPLE, on Sunday, June 7, state troopers received reports of a Toyota Supra driving recklessly on Interstate 10 near Bonnabel Boulevard in the community of Jefferson Parish. Not only did a tire blow out, but the vehicle also struck a concrete barrier.
The suspect, later identified as Victor M. Rivas, was then stopped while traveling south along Interstate 310 in St. Charles Parish. Officers said he showed signs of impairment. As police began to investigate, they alleged he jumped from an elevated portion of the freeway into a nearby swamp.
Deputies from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, with some help from drones, eventually found Rivas walking along U.S. Highway 61. He had visible injuries on both arms.
Was the Suspect Attacked by an Alligator?
Rivas was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired, resisting an officer, hit-and-run, and careless operation. While he has yet to be sentenced, he received a punishment of a different sort.
"When law enforcement approached, he fled again into a swampy area, where he was attacked by an alligator and sustained injuries to both arms," a press release states. "Despite his injuries, Rivas continued fleeing before being located and apprehended with the assistance of drone technology."
The suspect was then taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The press release also confirms that the alligator was not injured.
Louisiana State Police used the incident to remind motorists what can happen when operating a vehicle under the influence.
"Impaired driving can lead to serious and unpredictable consequences. Motorists are urged to make responsible decisions, plan ahead, and always designate a sober driver," the press release states. "Louisiana State Police appreciates the strong partnership and coordinated efforts of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office in bringing this incident to a successful resolution."
