Major Update in Lawsuit Against Aerosmith's Steven Tyler

A lawsuit filed in 2022 alleges that the Aerosmith frontman had a sexual relationship with a teenager in the 1970s.

A lawsuit against Steven Tyler was filed in 2022. It alleges that the Aerosmith frontman had a sexual relationship with the plaintiff, Julia Misley, while she was a teenager in the 1970s.

However, according to PEOPLE, much of that lawsuit has been dismissed.

What Happened With the Lawsuit Against Steven Tyler?

The outlet obtained court documents filed on April 28 showing that a judge ruled that Misley's complaint against Tyler would move forward with only one claim.

In a statement, the singer's attorney, David Long-Daniels, said, "This is a massive win for Steven Tyler. Today, the Court has dismissed with prejudice 99.9% of the claims against Mr. Tyler in this case. The court has decided that only one night, fifty-plus years ago, out of a three-year relationship is allowed to remain. We look forward to trying this case on Aug. 31."

The claim that remains is an intentional infliction of emotional distress. It alleges that Misley and the Aerosmith frontman had sex in a hotel and a public hot tub in California when she was only 16. The incident supposedly occurred in 1974.

The suit also claims that by June 1975, Misley and Tyler were "engaged to be married, expecting a child, and still living together in Massachusetts."

The plaintiff's lawyers did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

The Aerosmith Frontman Denies the Claims

In 2024, a court ruled that parts of Misley's complaint would be struck. It claimed that she suffered intentional infliction of emotional distress because of Tyler's memoirs. Tyler responded in 2022, claiming she couldn't use them as a cause for emotional distress in court because it was free speech, and she is not identified.

The singer published his memoirs in 1997 and 2011. He alleged that because Misley didn't sue until 2022, her claim was barred by the two-year statute of limitations. Additionally, he stated the First Amendment blocks her claims because his memoirs "relay his own experiences from his newsworthy life."

Tyler was not initially named in Misley's lawsuit. However, her allegations do match a passage in his 2011 book, Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?

He recalled a relationship with a 16-year-old girl whose parents "fell in love with me, signed a paper over for me to have custody, so I wouldn't get arrested if I took her out of state. I took her on tour with me."

Tyler denied Misley's claims in 2022, saying she consented to their relationship. He added that he had immunity as her legal guardian. At the time, Misley's lawyer claimed Tyer was "gaslighting" her.

A separate sexual assault lawsuit against Tyler was filed and dismissed in 2023, as a New York judge ruled the plaintiff waited too long to bring the allegations to light.
