As reported by the New York Post, inspectors at LaGuardia Airport discovered a "depression" in the pavement near the airstrip.
How Deep Is the Depression?
Officials at LaGuardia state that the depression was adjacent to one of the airport's two main runways.
"During an airfield inspection at LaGuardia Airport, an approximately two-inch depression adjacent to Runway 4/22 was identified," a statement read.
The airport stressed that the decision to close the runway was a proactive one. It was made out of an "abundance of caution." Officials `added that the issue does not pose an "immediate safety concern" to travelers.
Reports claimed there were 174 delays at the New York City-based airport yesterday. Arrivals were delayed an average of 48 minutes. However, that number steadily went down over the course of the day, according to FlightAware tracking data.
The Airport Is Repairing the Runway
The runway was expected to remain closed until the morning of June 18. Repair crews were working overnight to identify the cause of the depression.
"Our goal is to complete the assessment and any necessary repair work overnight and return the runway to service as soon as it is safe to do so," the airport said.
Operations will move to LaGuardia's remaining runway, 13/31, until repairs are completed. Passengers should check with their airlines for any possible delays.
This is the second time in less than a month that the runway pavement at LaGuardia has required emergency work. A sinkhole formed near the Memorial Day travel rush.
Then, back on March 22, two pilots were killed in a crash after the Air Canada flight was struck by a fire truck head-on.
The emergency vehicle was on its way to another part of the airfield. It was the first fatal crash at LaGuardia in over 30 years.
