The Mailman Was Arrested
As reported by the New York Post, Fresno, California, native and former U.S. Postal Service (USPS) worker Ronald Juckno was arrested Friday morning.
"According to court records, between August and September 2024, Juckno was found in possession of more than 8,500 pieces of mail that he had held onto and failed to deliver to his customers," stated the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California on Sep. 14.
It added, "The mail included sensitive items such as California EDD correspondence, financial records, insurance records, medical correspondence, tax records, and utility bills. He was placed on leave and then resigned his position as a mail carrier shortly after this discovery."
The 53-year-old Juckno could face up to five years in federal prison. He could also be charged with a fine of up to $250,000.
It Could Be Worse
Last year, a former USPS employee allegedly stole nearly $1.6 million in checks. A federal jury found 44-year-old Hachikosela Muchimba guilty on charges of mail theft and bank fraud.
In a statement, the DOJ said Muchimba stole checks "between December 2020 and March 2023." For over two years, he worked for the USPS and stole "US Treasury checks and private party checks." He then deposited them, "which he either altered and/or falsely endorsed," into bank accounts he controlled.
Federal prosecutors shared some of the luxuries that Muchimba purchased with his nearly $2 million, alleging the checks funded a "lavish lifestyle" that included international travel, stays at luxury hotels, and purchases at gentlemen's clubs. He somehow pulled this off for over two years.
Muchimba was found guilty of conspiracy to commit theft of mail and bank fraud, theft of mail, bank fraud, engaging in a monetary transaction in property derived from specified unlawful activity, and unlawful procurement of citizenship or naturalization.
