Madison Square Garden Put on Lockdown With President Trump Expected at Tonight's NY Knicks Game

President Donald Trump, reportedly a sports superfan, is expected to be in the house at Madison Square Garden tonight. He wants to watch the New York Knicks duke it out with the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Due to his anticipated presence, security has apparently been elevated to the absolute max at the iconic Big Apple venue. Per ABC News, "...[T]he New York Police Department and the Secret Service say they are planning to put Madison Square Garden on 'lockdown.'"

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch outlined the security strategy at a Monday press conference. A tight security perimeter will be set up around MSG. A watch party for fans that was planned for outside the Garden has been scrapped because of that measure. (However, a watch party will go on as planned on Wednesday for Game 4.)

Tisch explained this as well. "I think New Yorkers are used to presidents coming to town, and that they understand that that generally means lockdown of areas, and that's what you're going to see tonight at the Garden."

A "Security Frozen Zone" Is Anticipated To Be Established

According to Tisch, as of 4 p.m. Eastern Time, well before tip-off at 8:30 p.m., streets surrounding MSG will be shut down. "No one will be allowed inside the secured area unless they have a ticket to the game, a train ticket, they are going to a business inside the area, they have credentials, or they have some other authorized reason to be there."

Per ABC News, Tisch pointed out that nobody can get in that zone with a backpack "unless they are going to nearby Pennsylvania Station to catch a train," in the words of the outlet.

Fans Need To Get There Very Early

Fans should plan to get to MSG early because of the heightened security being implemented tonight. The special agent heading the Secret Service Field Office in New York, Matt McCool, had some advice. He suggested that spectators with tickets arrive about two hours prior to the start of the game. They should anticipate "'multiple layers' of security" to navigate.

It has been 53 years since the Knicks last brought home the NBA championship trophy. Fans, including President Donald Trump, are hoping that long dry spell ends very soon.
