Song Premiere: Lydia Luce Examines the Beauty of Letting Go in ‘Like You Do’

Fairlight Hubbard

We’ve all heard the saying “If you love something, let it go,” but what comes next? With her soaring new song “Like You Do,” Lydia Luce channels the moments of reflection that emerge after a relationship ends.

Anyone who has found themselves missing someone — or the lingering idea of someone — will immediately connect with the emotion in Luce’s voice. The blend of cuttingly honest lyrics, a stunning string section and viola, which Luce herself has played since she was a young child, creates an atmosphere of dizzying contemplation.

Take a listen to Lydia Luce’s “Like You Do” below.

“‘Like You Do’ was written with my friend Carl Anderson,” Luce tells Wide Open Country. “I had recently gone through a break up and there was some nostalgia lingering. It started as a poem that I wrote on a plane ride back from Los Angeles. I was remembering the beauty of my recent relationship and all that it taught me while learning to let it go. Musically, the arrangements for this song are very special. It felt so good recording this track. This was the first take the band (Ian Fitchuk, Todd Lambardo and Mike Rinne) played through. I remember looking around and feeling very lucky to get to record with such badass musicians. The string arrangements that Jordan Lehning wrote for this song are incredible. I loved playing viola on this one.”

Growing up in South Florida, Luce honed her skills on viola and guitar under the wing of her mother, who conducted her own symphony orchestra. After earning her master’s degree in viola performance, she focused on creating her own sound. She earned praise for her 2015 EP The Tides and toured with Sam Outlaw as a fiddle player. Now, Luce is gearing up to share her biggest project to date.

“Like You Do” will be featured on Lydia Luce’s upcoming album Azalea, due out on Sept. 21. You can find out more about her music and upcoming tour dates via her official website.
