Getting a degree is a really, really difficult thing. And lots of people don't end up making their way through it. Luke Combs is one of those people.
But he was so close. He attended Appalachian State University from 2008 to 2012 and studied criminal justice. According to Whiskey Riff, he was only around 20 credit hours shy of completing his degree. But he ended up picking his country music career over his criminal law degree.
And, as you know, that worked out super well for the country star. But now, Luke Combs' alma mater college is recognizing him in a pretty sweet way—an honorary degree. He was a part of the Spring 2022 Commencement ceremonies.
The day came with all the typical niceties. Nicole Combs, his wife, even posted a really cute photo on her Instagram story featuring some AppState cookies and a bouquet of flowers in the college's black, yellow, and white color scheme.
And Luke Combs posted about it himself. He posted a video of himself clad in Appalachian State regalia, including the iconic graduation hat. He also posted a picture on his story with a pretty simple yet effective caption, which I'm sure all graduates would have screaming at the top of their heads: "Hell yeah."

Luke Combs Reflected On His Time In College
Appalachian State Chancellor Heather Norris reflected on the influence of Luke Combs and his country music.
"In every sense, Luke Combs represents the character and heart of a Mountaineer. His story inspires our students to dream big, work hard, and always remember where they came from. He represents the very best of our university community."
But when he was at college, he had to make a choice between typical college life and a more music-based approach. While he was considering joining a fraternity, he was also in an a cappella singing group. And he had to pick between the two, according to Whiskey Riff.
"I got the bid to join [the frat], you know, I'm pledging and do the thing and it's Big Brother reveal night," the country singer explained in an interview. "I was still in the a cappella group at the time, and so Big Brother reveal night, we had a concert for the a capella group... And they were like, 'Well, you gotta choose, dude.'... And I was like, 'Well, I'm doing that dude. I'm out!'"
And we're so glad he made the right decision there. Congrats to Luke Combs on his degree!
