Lukas Nelson Thoughtfully Defends Willie Nelson's Support of Beto O'Rourke

Over the weekend, Lukas Nelson posted a video to his Facebook page standing up for father's support of Democratic candidate Beto O'Rourke, who's running against Republican Ted Cruz to take a seat in the U.S. Senate in Texas' November elections. Country music legend Willie Nelson is set to play a rally for Beto, marking the first time Nelson will play a free public concert for a political candidate.

"My father has always led with his heart," Lukas stated. "Republican or Democrat, he's always stood for the candidate who best represented his values, which include love for thy neighbor, no matter what color or nationality; responsibility with firearms, including some regulation to prevent unnecessary violence; and healthcare that isn't owned by private companies who put your health below their profit."

Though some fans are upset with Willie, in the video, it's clear that Lukas is very proud of his dad. Lukas carefully wrote down his thoughts in the hopes that people will take the time to consider his father's beliefs and his own. He also asked for respect from those who disagree and encourages everyone to research and think for themselves as country outlaws do.

"My wife Annie and I have met and spoken with Beto and we share his concern for the direction things are headed. Beto embodies what is special about Texas, an energy and an integrity that is completely genuine," Willie said in a statement. He's already shared the stage once with Beto during his Fourth of July Picnic celebration where they played guitar and sang together on "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."

Willie, along with sons Lukas and Micah Nelson, Joe Ely, Tameca Jones, and Carrie Rodriguez will play Beto O'Rourke's rally on Sept. 29 from 8 - 11:00 PM at Austin's Auditorium Shores.
