Lottery Winner Dies Following Suspected Hit-and-Run
Essex Police confirmed that an 18-year-old driver of a Ford Ka was arrested in connection with the collision.
However, the teenager was later released under investigation while inquiries continue.
According to police, the driver allegedly left the scene after the collision on Maldon Road.
Canty was rushed to the hospital in a serious condition, where medical staff fought to save his life.
Officers later located the driver and arrested him on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop at the scene.
"He remains under investigation and our enquiries continue," a police spokesman said.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses and anyone with information about the collision to come forward.
Heroic Act Changed His Life Before Lottery Win
Canty made headlines in April 2020 after helping save the life of a police officer who collapsed on a bus.
He was traveling home from Witham train station to Maldon when the officer suddenly collapsed "in [his] lap".
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Canty alerted the driver and helped bring the bus to a stop.
Having received first-aid training through his work, he administered CPR while receiving guidance from an emergency call operator.
The officer was later airlifted to the hospital, where he spent five days in intensive care before making a recovery.
In an extraordinary twist of fate, Canty won a £1 million ($1.3 million) EuroMillions jackpot just days after the incident.
Photographs at the time showed Canty and his partner, Katie Sullivan, celebrating with champagne while holding a giant cheque.
Despite the life-changing win, Canty insisted he had no plans to leave his job in the water supply industry.
"I like it and I'm proud of what we do so I'm definitely not giving that up."
Canty remained in contact with the officer after his lottery success.
"I phoned him [about] the win and he said, 'Good karma happens to good people,'" he said at the time.
