Leonardo DiCaprio is an actor who takes his work very seriously. So seriously in fact, that during filming for The Revenant, he did something he now vows to never do again -- eat a raw bison liver. Sound gross? Yeah, Leo thought so, too.
In an interview with the TODAY Show, DiCaprio sits down with Savannah Guthrie to talk about the new movie. He admits that in the scene where he eats a slab of bison liver, it's 100% authentic.
At first, he was given a gelatinous prop but thought it looked too fake. DiCaprio says eating the raw liver was "... completely disgusting. My reaction is very much on screen, which is a nauseating one." Sounds like he may have regretted opting for the real deal. We don't blame him.
Eating raw animal organs wasn't the only challenging thing about filming The Revenant. DiCaprio says it was the hardest film he'd ever been a part of, mostly because of the conditions the crew and actors were actually enduring.
The sub-zero temperatures you see in the movie are what they were really filming in. The grueling process must have paid off, because DiCaprio is nominated for a Best Actor Golden Globe for his performance.
The Revenant, set in the 1800's, follows explorer and legendary frontiersman, Hugh Glass. After being attacked by a bear and abandoned by his hunting team, he journeys across the western wilderness to get back to his family and exact revenge on the man who betrayed him. The Revenant is now playing in theaters across the country.
