Legendary Genre-Defining Artist Dead at 75 After Cancer Battle

The legendary artist was known both for his stint in the iconic art punk band Television and his eclectic solo career.

Richard Lloyd, who was known for being a genre-defining artist in the post-punk scene, has died at the age of 75. As reported by Consequence Sound, he was most well known for his role as a co-founding member and guitarist of the band Television.

A statement released to Rolling Stone confirmed his tragic passing. His family wrote that "his loving wife Sheila and his dog Willie Mays were with him at the end". They also confirmed his cause of death as having been cholangiocarcinoma, which is a "serious" form of bile duct cancer.

The genre-defining artist was most well known for his stint in Television. He was known as an integral part of the band and performed with them up until 1978, when they went on hiatus. However, his permanent exit from the band came after a reunion in the '90s. The artist left in 2007 "on good terms" with the band.

He went on to become a critically acclaimed solo artist. He released nine albums over the years, which were met with positive reviews from fans.

Of his career, per the outlet, Lloyd once said, "I'm a musician by refusing to grow up... Not wanting to undertake any of the other disciplines that might have been necessitated by having a goal."

This Comes After the Legendary Artist Announced His Cancer Diagnosis Back in August

This comes after the artist revealed some unfortunate news back in August. Per Consequence Sound, he released a statement and also started a fundraiser online. His announcement revealed he had been diagnosed with "tumors in his liver, [and also] one located dangerously close to a major blood vessel."

"I am usually a pretty upbeat person and I am taking this in stride," he wrote as a part of his statement. "But it has become very difficult on our own and financially we are strapped. That's why I'm asking you for your help. If you can see your way clear to make a donation please do that."

"Otherwise, please pass it around to your friends," he concluded.

May he rest in peace. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.
