Legendary College Basketball Coach Living With “Progressive Cognitive Condition”

Legendary college basketball coach Bob Huggins is preparing to be inducted into the University of Cincinnati's Athletic Hall of Fame. But before he is forever enshrined in Bearcat history, his family felt that now was the most "appropriate" time to give fans an update on his health.

Bob Huggins Family Gives Update on His Health

In a statement released in conjunction with the University of Cincinnati, Huggins' family revealed that he is "living with a progressive cognitive condition." One that has started to "affect his memory and aspects of his daily life."

"While the family has chosen to keep this matter private over the past several months, they believe this is an appropriate time to share the news with the many people who have supported Bob throughout his remarkable career. Particularly as he prepares to be honored with induction into the University of Cincinnati's James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame," the statement reads (via On3).

The family was also very blunt about the severity of the coach's current condition. And what the road ahead could look like for him. In their words, they expect him to have "challenges." However, they are staying positive by focusing on what "brings him "joy."

"Although Bob and his family recognize the challenges that lie ahead, they remain focused on the relationships, experiences, and moments that bring him joy," the statement adds. "He continues to be surrounded by the unwavering love and support of his wife June. His daughters, Jenna and Jacqueline; and his entire family.

Legendary Coach Coached Multitude of Stars

Huggins sat among the top coaches in college basketball across four decades. And for good reason.

He is just the sixth men's coach to reach 900 career wins and one of the few to win 300 or more games at two different schools.

Huggins also has a decorated roster of players that have learned under his tutelage. He coached more than 20 NBA draft selections and multiple lottery picks during his career. Notable NBA players he coached include Kenyon Martin, Nick Van Exel, Danny Fortson, Corie Blount, Jevon Carter, Joe Alexander, and DerMarr Johnson.

Huggins is set to be inducted into the James P. Kelly UC Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday (October 23).
