‘Landman’ Star Reveals He’s Been Writing Country Music

The 'Landman' star reveals that while he grew up with rock 'n' roll, he's managed to turn into a pretty prolific country music writer.

One of the best things about country music is that it's just so fun. Whether you've dabbled in playing or writing some music or not, just getting your teeth into the genre is just plain entertaining. And it looks like Landman star Billy Bob Thornton agrees. Because, according to Taste of Country, he's started to write country music!

The Landman star first started his country stint when he collaborated with his friend and co-star Mark Collie. They wrote the song "Midnight After Midnight", which starred in the show's soundtrack.

Thornton explained that he's "been writing a lot of country songs". He added, "For some reason, all of a sudden... I grew up in rock 'n' roll, I don't know how to write a country song... [but] next thing you know, all the country guys want to write with me."

He's been on a pretty mean streak with his pen, too. He revealed that he's "probably written... I don't know... 18 to 20 songs?" with most of these looking to be recorded for various country albums. While Thornton said that it's new to him, he definitely seems to have a knack for it, especially since more and more people want to collab!

The 'Landman' Star Says He Prefers Old-Style Country

The Landman star made his music preferences clear. Thornton explained that "modern country music doesn't thrill" him. He made a pretty funny comparison of the genre, calling it "Def Leppard with a steel guitar". He also branded it "pop music".

Whether you agree with him or not, he makes a pretty funny point. But he says that he drew most of his inspiration from the greats, like Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash.

While we aren't sure just who he's collaborated with on the other 15 or so songs, we know that Thornton and Collie are credited with five songs on the Landman album Landman - Songs From And Inspired By The Paramount+ Original Series (Volume I).

These songs are: "Midland After Midnight" by The Flatland Cavalry; "Livin' It Up Down In Texas" by Billy Gibbons; "She'll Dance For Whiskey" by Parker McCollum; "That's What Lonely People Do" by Dwight Yokam; and "Blood For Black Gold" by Ronnie Dunn.

We can't wait to hear more from Billy Bob Thornton!
