E-Bike Injury ER Visits Increase By Triple Digits
Per a recent study done by Truveta, the rate of emergency room visits related to e-bike injuries rose about 1,810% among children and adolescents and 760% overall between January 2023 and August 2026.
Dr. Karen Gilbert Farrar, a Truveta researcher who worked on the analysis, said, "We hypothesize that e-bikes are likely becoming more commonly used; traditional bicycles may not be." (Via New York Post).
Dr. Farrar also added: "We see that there are increasing numbers of e-bikes in cities. Or increasing numbers of users of the rental e-bikes. And then anecdotally, there's also more ability to purchase personal e-bike devices."
Dr. Farrar also noted that during the study, researchers consulted with a doctor who emphasized that only one person should ride a bike at a time. That led Farrar to question, "So how are kids more likely to have multiple passengers kind of hanging off their e-bike?"
In New York City, Citi Bike's fleet includes more than 14,000 e-bikes available for public use.
In August 2026, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced action against online retailers selling illegal, high-speed e-bikes and other motorized devices in the city.
Mamdani took legal action against 42 online retailers and issued cease-and-desist orders demanding that they immediately stop selling the illegal devices to New York City customers.
"These are not unavoidable tragedies, they are preventable losses," Mamdani said at the time. "Today, we're putting online retailers on notice: if you continue selling dangerous, illegal devices into New York City, you will be held accountable. We will use every tool available to make our streets safer for everyone who walks, bikes, drives, or rides."
