Kevin Costner Will Tell You History Stories on Your Next Road Trip

When he's not busy being the patriarch on the hit Paramount series Yellowstone or ruling the big screen, Hollywood legend Kevin Costner is lending his voice to family road trips everywhere. Okay, so you won't get to ride with the Field of Dreams star in the flesh, but, with a new app, you can take the voice of John Dutton with you on your next vacation.

The Oscar-winner is the co-founder of the new iPhone app HearHere, which tells stories about your surroundings using your GPS location. It's the perfect gift for that person in your family that insists on stopping at every historical marker — much like Costner himself.

"I love stories. I am the guy that stops at the historical markers along the highway - usually bringing moans from everyone in the car. But it was this continuing curiosity that I began to think HearHere could satisfy without anyone having to leave the car. Why couldn't we replicate every marker along the highway - even expanding from the usual paragraph in bronze that always left me wanting more," Costner writes on the app website. "I am in love with history. I am in love with Country. I am in love with all the edges, all the disappointments, all the progress—all worth knowing."

Costner explained that that the most important aspect of the app is telling the true history of each region.

"The most important thing to me, and why I chose to be a part of this idea, is that we agreed as a group that no matter the region, we would always start with the history of the first people and the stories of first contact. It's not only our responsibility, it's our obligation to understand and to pass on faithfully the stories of the people who flourished here for thousands of years," Costner said.

In addition to Costner, Hall of Fame basketball coach Phil Jackson will lend his voice to the narration team.

The app currently includes stories about California, Oregon, and Washington. The team is working on 10,000 more stories about regions across the U.S. The team is currently working on an app for Android phones.

The app is available with a free trial and has a yearly subscription of $49.99. The app is running at half off through the end of August.
