"He's a whole and I'm a whole..."
13 years ago, Kelly Clarkson won the crown in the inaugural season of American Idol. Today, Clarkson is one of our biggest pop stars and known as a role model for women on issues including body image, confidence and ultimately being "Miss Independent." In a recent interview with Redbook, Clarkson expressed her love for husband Brandon Blackstock but clarified that she does not consider him to be her other half.
"Brandon is not my other half," Clarkson told Redbook. "He's a whole and I'm a whole. I've never believed in someone taking care of me, and that's probably because I grew up poor and without a lot of family stability."
The statement shines a light on Clarkson's priorities - the balance of marriage, independence and always taking care of yourself first. "I always swore ours would not be a relationship where we have to schedule sex. That is never going to happen. We put each other first. I call it the oxygen-mask mentality--take care of yourself first!"
Clarkson has had a busy 2015 so far. Her seventh studio album, Piece by Piece, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in March and her Piece by Piece tour kicks off in Hershey, Penn. in July.
