Karmelo Anthony was 17 when he claimed he stabbed his classmate, Austin Metcalf, in self-defense. The incident took place in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025.
What Happened to Austin Metcalf?
Authorities said Anthony stabbed Metcalf after asking him to move from a tent where he was sitting.
An affidavit claimed that Anthony said to Metcalf, "Touch me and see what happens." Metcalf was also 17 at the time of the incident.
After Metcalf went to physically move him, Anthony then allegedly pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed him in the chest.
"I was only protecting myself," Anthony told police as he was arrested.
Said Metcalf's twin brother, "I pushed my hand on there [his brother's chest], to try and make it stop, and I grabbed his head, and I looked in his eyes. I just saw his soul leave, and it took my soul too."
Anthony confessed to the crime. He was then held on $1 million bail.
A GoFundMe Was Set Up for Karmelo Anthony
An online fundraiser was set up for Anthony soon after the incident. The reason was unclear, though it was believed to help with any legal costs.
The page read, "While legal defense is a critical part of this journey, we want to make it clear that this fund is not solely dedicated to legal expenses. The funds raised will also support a range of urgent and necessary needs that have emerged as a result of this situation, including — but not limited to — the safe relocation of the Anthony family due to escalating threats to their safety and well-being, as well as basic living costs, transportation, counseling, and other security measures."
At the start of the trial, prosecutors argued the case was "race-neutral." Controversy began when no Black jurors were selected. Anthony is Black, and Metcalf was White.
