According to ABC News, the incident took place on Tuesday, April 29, at the 46-mile marker of Interstate 85. As reported by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, agents arrived at the scene after receiving reports of a kangaroo hopping down I-85, having caused a two-vehicle crash.

"Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division along with the animal's owner conducted a recovery of the kangaroo," local police said in a statement.

Given the nature of the report, many witnesses were left in awe at the sight of the marsupial.

"That is insane! Where would we find a kangaroo in Alabama?" Connie Clinton, one of the witnesses, told WTVM. "I thought there had been a wreck, but no, it was a wreck caused by a kangaroo. Waiting 40 minutes, 30 minutes. All because of a kangaroo. And I'm hopping mad!"

Similarly, another witness named Matt Vines was minding his own business when the kangaroo managed to get his whole attention.

"We were just trying to get to some places for this afternoon and didn't think we'd be stopping for a kangaroo," Vines said. "I never thought we'd see a kangaroo on 85."

Even the Macon County Sheriff, Andre Brunson, expressed his surprise after finding out about the rogue animal, saying, "When somebody said there was a kangaroo, of course I didn't believe it, and nobody believed it. But I'm looking at him."

Sheila, The Kangaroo

To recover the animal, authorities shut down both the north and south lanes of I-85. The marsupial's owner, Patrick Starr, managed to tranquilize the animal by using a dart, according to The Associated Press.

Starr manages a pumpkin patch and a petting zoo, with Sheila, the kangaroo, being a personal pet of Starr, according to him. Reportedly, Sheila managed to escape from her enclosure.

Upon recovery and after receiving treatment, Sheila came back home. There, she is back to her normal habits of eating, drinking, and, of course, hopping around. Thankfully, Sheila was uninjured, as well as the others involved in the car crash, as per WTVM.

"She's a sweet pet. I'm glad she's back home, and I'm glad everybody slowed down a little bit," Starr said.
