Although he co-wrote "Homesick" about leaving his wife Katelyn Jae behind when touring, Kane Brown has always used his country airplay hit as a way to show some love for the service members in his loyal fanbase. That point got driven home by a music video which shows Brown performing for the California National Guard.
On the one year anniversary of "Homesick's" release as a single (Aug. 5), Brown shares a special remix featuring the vocal talents of three veterans: Generald Wilson, Retired Petty Officer First Class, U.S. Navy; J.W. Cortes, Retired Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marines; and Sal Gonzalez, Retired Lance Corporal, U.S. Marines.
"The veterans really related to this one," Brown says. "I haven't got to meet them, but I watched the little documentary they did and they were saying how they used to be homesick. I've gotten so much feedback from military people on this song that it felt like it was needed. And they killed it. They did great. I'm so excited for it to come out on the anniversary that we released it originally."
Brown and his unlikely country song collaborators joined forces for a good cause. Per a press release, for every stream of "Homesick (Veterans Version)," The Crown Royal Purple Bag Project will pack one bag to be donated as a care package to non-profit Packages From Home as part of the brand's goal of one million bags by the end of 2020, and will donate $1 to community-based 501(c)3 organization Minority Veterans of America, up to $100,000.
"Homesick" has been a smash success since its release, earning platinum status and nearing 80K streams on Spotify. Hopefully, the new version piggybacks off that while raising funds for veterans and frontline workers impacted by COVID-19.
Brown co-wrote "Homesick," the third single off the album Experiment (RCA Nashville), with Brock Berryhill, Matt McGinn and Taylor Phillips.
Expect a new Brown album soon, including a homage to one of country music's most fiscally successful decades.
"I'm excited about this album because it's my most diverse album so far. I've got a song with H.E.R. coming out on the album," he recently told Apple Music's Brooke Reese. "And then we got the remix with Nelly. It's my song 'Cool Again' so it should be pretty cool. But then, I got like a nineties sounding country song on there. I have country songs, my country songs that sound like me. And then we're already going to start working on another pop single."
