Sitcom Star Reveals Cast Mates Don't Stay in Contact After Show Ended

The casts of sitcoms seem so chummy on screen. We often assume that is the case in real life as well. Pals on the set, off the set too, right? Well, not always. When the curtain comes down for the very last time and the show goes off the air for good, the actors we love don't always remain connected. That does not denote any animosity. It's just that people simply go their separate ways. According to Josh Radnor of How I Met Your Mother, everyone sort of drifted apart when the beloved CBS sitcom ended after nine seasons in 2014. In fact, he claims that they are allegedly now "not even a little bit" close. Speaking on the Half the Picture podcast, Radnor added, "I don't mean that in any dramatic way."

The Actor Has Had Occasional Contact With His Former 'HIMYM' Colleagues

Radnor said on the podcast that he and Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris, Cobie Smulders, and Alyson Hannigan have had some fleeting, superficial contact. He compared the situation to being in college. You're thrown together with all these people for a limited amount of time. Then when that time inevitably ends, it's a quick goodbye and on to the next thing.

"It's like college where you have this very intense time together and you think you're going to be... you can't imagine not seeing each other every day. And then it just disperses and you just go out and live your life."

Radnor Said Fans Like To Fantasize About How Friendly the Cast Still May Be

He commented that people mistakenly envision the cast still hanging out together. However, that is simply not true. Josh Radnor set the record straight. "People really want to believe that, like, me and Neil and Jason are hitting bars in New York City together. People really want to believe that.

Furthermore, he said, "It's a little more like family than friends in that you don't get to choose your family. We were cast. We didn't choose each other. And family dynamics come out to play when you're in an environment like that for so long."

Neil Patrick Harris and Radnor Aired Their Differences Recently

The two actors got together in March on the How We Made Your Mother podcast and talked about their past challenges as cast mates. Harris noted, "I remember often when we were filming, and I sensed frustration from you because you wanted the scene to be like a good scene and I was looking at you like, 'Mother[expletive], I'm doing spit takes."

Radnor, for his part, acknowledged that he may have felt a bit unconfident because some of the actors on HIMYM were better known than he was back then. "I think that I was just trying to manage a lot of different things and emotions, and they came out sideways sometimes."
