Video Premiere: John Surge and the Haymakers' 'Your Wonderful Life'

John Surge and the Haymakers mix West Coast country and rowdy rock 'n' roll on their debut album Your Wonderful Life ( out on October 25). Inspired by the twangy Cali cowpunk bands  of the '80s and '90s like Rank and File and Lone Justice, the band, which formed in 2016, is reintroducing themselves to fans of SoCal country with their forthcoming record.

"I'd never put my name on anything before," Surge says in a press release, "so I decided to try it. I connected with an amazing, versatile guitarist named Randy Volin — he's like my Mike Campbell — and traded in my Telecaster electric for a Gibson acoustic."

Surge says the album's title track is about yearning for a life that often seems out of reach.

"'Your Wonderful Life,' the title song from the debut album by John Surge and the Haymakers is a rollicking country rocker that laments being an outsider yearning for a life that appears way too grand," Surge tells Wide Open Country.

Your Wonderful Life was recorded at the Sonic Boom Room in Venice and was produced and engineered by Kevin Jarvis. The album features pedal steel guitarist Marty Rifkin (Bruce Springsteen's Western Stars), bass player Steve Nelson (Pete Anderson), harmony singer KP Hawthorn (Calico, the HawtThorns), and keyboardist Carl Byron (Anne McCue, Jim Lauderdale).
