Actor John Goodman was not always the slim, fit man he is now. In fact, he admits that he once weighed some 400 pounds in 2011. His was a lifestyle of unabashed excess. Per The New Yorker, Goodman said that he stopped drinking almost 20 years ago. Even before then, however, his out-of-control eating was an issue. He says he swung from weight loss to weight gain like a yo-yo. And when Goodman ended his drinking, the overeating seemingly took over with a vengeance.

He shared, "I'd lose 60 pounds in a summer, gain it all back. Seventy pounds, 80 pounds. And that got tiring. I took steps so I wouldn't have to do that anymore. I was almost 400 pounds. I was eating alcoholically after I stopped drinking." Eventually, maintaining his sobriety and radically changing his eating habits became a matter of absolute, unquestionable, life-saving necessity.
Without being too detailed, Goodman also mentioned that he underwent "an operation on my stomach." It apparently caused other health problems for him. He added, "I also turned anemic and lost a layer of fat under my skin and I'm cold all the time."
Goodman Definitely Understands the Link Between Drinking Too Much and Eating Too Much
The star said that it comes down to "instant gratification." And that means not fretting about what comes afterward. "The thing about instant gratification is you don't really care what's going to happen right after it — which always led to bigger hangovers or me getting the shakes, and having to drink to get rid of the shakes, and that vicious cycle."
There came a time, though, when John Goodman had enough of his bingeing. "I was overlooking real life. And it was great to see there was a life where I didn't have to use anything to enjoy it."
He Reportedly Gave a Thumbs-Down to a Cameo Appearance on Roseanne Barr's New Show
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Roseanne Barr is launching a "self-financed single-camera sitcom" titled Meemaw: A Modern-Day Fable. She's aiming for a splashy comeback after the disastrous scrapping of her Roseanne reboot by the ABC network in 2018. Barr's controversial tweet about former Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett, thought by many to be racist, spelled the end of her sitcom.
According to Roseanne Barr, John Goodman won't be appearing on her new venture. Barr told the outlet, "My son called Goodman and asked him to do a cameo on Meemaw and he declined."
