Update: Buffett's cause of death has been revealed to be Merkel cell cancer, a rare form of skin cancer. The singer battled skin cancer for years before his death.

Buffett was hospitalized earlier this year, writing "growing old is not for sissies" in a message to fans.

Though a prolific singer-songwriter whose devoted fanbase dubbed themselves "Parrotheads," Buffett was best known for his timeless song "Margaritaville," a 1977 smash hit that would inspire an empire — restaurants, resorts, clothing, food and beverages and more — as well as a lifestyle.

Several artists have paid tribute to Buffett in the wake of the news of his passing.

Kenny Chesney shared a video of himself singing on a beach, writing "So goodbye Jimmy. Thanks for your friendship and the songs I will carry in my heart forever. Sail On Sailor."

Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys wrote "Love and Mercy, Jimmy Buffett."

Mark Wystrach of Midland, wrote "God Speed & thank you for everything Jimmy."

Buffett is survived by his wife Jane and their children Savannah, Sarah and Cameron.
