Jim Carrey has opened up about the death of the mastermind behind The Mask, Chuck Russell. As reported by TMZ, he tragically passed away at his San Diego home on Wednesday, July 22.
Jim Carrey shared a statement with the outlet about his heartbreak over Russell's death. "I consider it a privilege to have worked with Chuck Russell, who, during the shooting of 'The Mask', created an ebullient, childlike atmosphere of wonder and camaraderie on his set," he wrote.
"The entire cast and crew were touched and inspired by his playfulness," he continued. "Every one of us has been many years blessed by that buoyant and timeless moment. I consider 'The Mask' one of the jewels of my creative life. Thank you, Chuck."
Jim Carrey was first made famous because of the hilarious 90s blockbusters he starred in. The first of these was Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, with The Mask following suit. Dumb & Dumber finished off the trio of hilarious flicks.
Russell's first directing credit was 1987's A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. He also worked on 1988's The Blob. His last credit was a writing and directorial role on a remake of 1986's Witchboard, which he did in 2024.

Jim Carrey Wasn't the Only Legend To Pay Tribute
Of course, with Chuck Russell having directed other legendary films, he also received tributes from other stars and fans alike across social media.
"RIP to him," one fan wrote: "Created one amazing funny movie with Mask." Other fans were quick to mention The Blob, with one calling it a "masterpiece" and another calling it a "tremendously underrated horror flick".
Another fan lamented, "Thank you for making some of the best movies you made Chuck Russell the most importantly I did like is the mask one of iconic movie with Jim Carrey he played would never forget, and I'm going to miss you your legacy lives on rest in peace RIP."
His cause of death has not currently been confirmed, although TMZ reported that the fire department responded to a call about an unconscious man. Our thoughts and prayers are with Russell's family as they navigate this loss. Rest in peace.
