Jessi Colter is officially making her return to music with her forthcoming new album, Edge of Forever, available via Appalachia Record Co. on Oct. 27. The singer — who has been called the "First Lady of Outlaw Country" thanks to her music and marriage to Waylon Jennings — will release 10 new tracks on the project.
Colter called on country artist Margo Price to produce the album, and the project was mixed by Colter and Jennings' son, Shooter Jennings. Price also joins Colter on three tracks. Recorded alongside a live band in Nashville, Tenn., the album features songs that span decades — some written by Colter and Jennings in the 1970s and others that were found in a forgotten briefcase.
The album begins with Colter's first new single in six years, "Standing on the Edge of Forever." A few familiar tracks appear on the album as well, including reimagined versions of as "With or Without You" and "Maybe You Should" (feat. Margo Price). Colter lends her voice to a gospel track on "Can't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus," and she collaborates with her daughter, Jenni Eddy Jennings, on the last track, "Secret Place."
"It was really sheer enjoyment for me to be able to do, because I really hadn't planned anything much further," Colter says of the album in a press release. "Edge of Forever is a love project."
Price calls Colter a "force of nature" and says she knew she was in for a "wild ride" when she agreed to produce the project.
"Jessi has such a strong faith, it's inspiring to be near her," Price adds. "When she sang 'Standing on the Edge of Forever' and 'Angel in the Fire' back-to-back for me, I was blown away. It was such refined writing, the work of someone who had been continuously, quietly honing her craft. I knew she had to make another album and told her I would love to be a part of that experience."
