Prepare to get goosebumps. Jennifer Nettles performed “The Star Spangled Banner” this past weekend in front of 150,000 college football fans and brought the house down.
Dubbed “The Battle at Bristol,” Virginia Tech and the University of Tennessee met at Bristol Motor Speedway for an epic college football showdown. The event drew 156,990 spectators, completely shattering the previous record of 115,000.
The game took place on Sept. 10, one day before the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. To commemorate the event, game organizers pulled out all the stops for the anthem.
Much of the crowd held up coordinated color posters. The effect created a giant waving American flag in the crowd accented by a giant “USA.” Fireworks, armed color guard and a flyover accentuated the event.
But Nettles’ vocal performance stole the show.
One half of the hit country duo Sugarland, Jennifer Nettles recently released her second solo album. Since she’s no stranger to big crowds, her performance was flawless. And the look on her face says it all.
Sure, the view of the field from the actual stands was apparently horrible. And the game didn’t amount to much of a competition on the field. But the anthem performance is sure to stand out as a highlight moment of this year’s season.
