Jeep's Daring Dance with Disaster
Sunday evening took a sharp turn when the teen, piloting a silver 2008 Jeep SUV, floored the gas by mistake. Her vehicle roared forward, obliterating a bulkhead at the Port Jefferson marina. For a heart-stopping moment, it seemed destined for the Long Island Sound. Yet, fate had other plans: the Jeep skidded onto a floating dock, dodging a watery plunge.
Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico
caught the chaos on video and shared it on Facebook. The clip shows the SUV lunging through the barrier mid-parking attempt."Every day, I wake up and never know what the day will bring," Panico wrote. "Moments ago, an inexperienced driver drove off the Port Jefferson Dock, and luckily onto a floating dock. Thankfully, no one was injured.
The crash mangled the dock's boards and ripped off the Jeep's front bumper.
Heroes Swoop In, Teen Bounces Back
Firefighters didn't waste a second, yanking the teen from her crumpled ride. They whisked her to a hospital for a quick checkup. Sporting only minor bumps, she was back home shortly after, her family confirmed to News 12. Meanwhile, the Port Jefferson Fire Department showed crash pics on social media and called in a tow truck to haul the Jeep away.
Suffolk County Police and Fire Marshals raced to the scene, joined by Brookhaven's Parks and Public Safety crews. Their lightning-fast teamwork earned a tip of the hat from Panico.
Marina Makeover on the Horizon
This close call lit a fire under town officials. They're now plotting ways to beef up marina safety. New safeguards are being considered to keep drivers and dockside strollers out of harm's way.
In the end, the teen's lucky escape owes a nod to chance and sturdy marina design.
