Honky tonk legend Ollie Imogene “Jean” Shepard’s husband was injured in a fatal stabbing this past Saturday. Per the Tennessean, Shepherd’s 79-year old widower Benny Birchfield, was injured during a stabbing that took place inside his home.
Sadly, two others were also stabbed and killed in Birchfield’s Hendersonville, Tenn. home. Hendersonville Police received a 911 phone call about a stabbing around 3 a.m. Saturday morning (Dec. 17), and found themselves at Birchfield’s home.
Birchfield was found apparently injured, wandering around the front yard of the home he shared with Jean Shepard. While police have chosen not to identify the surviving victim of the stabbing, the address reported matches that of Birchfield’s.
According to Nashville’s WKRN, Birchfield was the only survivor of the tragic stabbing. Police found the body of 21-year old Travis Sanders inside Birchfield’s home, dead due to a gunshot wound. Also found in the home was Icie Hawkins, Birchfield’s 18-year old granddaughter, who was rushed to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
Hendersonville police reported that they have yet to uncover a motive for the stabbing. Authorities did confirm that Hawkins lived with Birchfield in the Hendersonville home, and that she and Sanders knew each other.
Taken to a hospital for emergency surgery for his injuries, Birchfield is reported to be improving in health.
Benny Birchfield is a country and bluegrass legend, having played alongside the Osborne Brothers and Roy Orbison. Here’s hoping he makes a quick and speedy recovery, and finds peace in this trying time.
