In a world where false advertisement is the new norm, can you blame a product for fulfilling its purpose? That's the case with Javeria Wasim and her Jawbreaker incident. When out with a friend, Wasim decided to try her luck and bite into a jawbreaker candy, despite the name's implicit warning. Her jaw broke, and she needed surgery and braces to fix it.

Wasim took to TikTok to share her jawbreaking story. "I was with my friend at the mall, and we went into [a shop] to see if they had jawbreakers. We got a giant one, the biggest size they had," Wasim said, according to the Daily Mail. "I said, 'We have to break it because people lick their way through it, and it takes them months to get through it all.'"
Wasim then wondered if they could bite the candy in an attempt to defy the "jawbreaker" quality of the sweet. However, she was met with a less-than-desirable outcome. "I bit into it and only made a hole, and my jaw started to hurt. My friend looked over and said my tooth was chipped."
Worried about her tooth, she soon visited the hospital where an X-ray and a CT scan revealed the gravity of her injury. "They told me my jaw was broken and needed to be wired shut," Wasim said. What she thought was a broken tooth was actually two jaw fractures that needed emergency surgery. "I was shocked; I thought my biggest problem was my broken tooth," Wasim said.
As a result of her surgery, Wasim's jaw was wired shut for a total of six weeks. She now uses braces to help realign her teeth.
Jawbreaker No More
Given that the Jawbreaker actually broke Wasim's jaw, it is safe to say that the 19-year-old will probably never attempt to do something similar in the future. "All my bottom teeth are messed up. My two front teeth have a little gap now so I'll have to get braces to fix them," Wasim said. However, her inability to eat solids and limiting her diet to protein shakes and soups was the most frustrating, leading to her losing weight fast.
According to Javeria Wasim, she hasn't eaten in 42 days, and the inability to lick her lips or use her teeth to open something makes her feel "irritated." "You realize how important your mouth is, you use it for literally everything in your life. It has affected my life so much," Wasim said. "It was a dumb idea I had with my friend. I'm definitely traumatized so I would say I probably wouldn't have one again."
