J.K Simmons Opens Up About "Ridiculous" Audition For Yellow M&M

We all know those cute M&M characters that pop up in commercials. But it turns out Mars takes the casting of them REALLY seriously.

Everyone has their dream role, no matter their job. Some people just want to be happy, no matter the money, and others want to look to the sky and rise to stardom.

Others, it seems, want to be the Yellow M&M. Well, not J.K Simmons - he was more of a Red M&M guy. But the spat that came from that argument, and his subsequent casting as Yellow, just shows how much passion any two people can have about... chocolate?

As reported by People, he opened up about his experience in the casting process with Janet Eisenberg, the casting director.

"We had this long discussion," he recalled. "I was like, 'So I'm going to read for Red M&M and Janet Eisenberg, she was like, 'Oh no no no, J, I think you're more of a Yellow M&M."

While we're not quite sure what constitutes the Red M&M versus the Yellow, Mars appears to. That's because they have a whole section on their website dedicated to the differing personality types of all the M&Ms in the form of a Q&A...

In case you're interested, let's see the differences between the two icons. Red's tagline is, "I instinctively know I have great instincts," whereas Yellow's is "My favorite thing about today is everything". Pretty different, right?

This M&M Stuff Gets Serious

Well, Eisenberg was really passionate about this. "We really went back and forth," he recalled.

He even compared their discussion as if they were "talking about, am I going to play Mitch or Stanley in Streetcar." They're referring to the iconic Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire, which does have a lot of perfect casting involved in every production.

Simmons ended up relenting - in his words, "finally I went, 'Okay, yeah, whatever you think." But he definitely ended up eating his words. He explained, "Then now, 30 years later, thank you, Janet Eisenberg!"

And he's grown to love his role, later referring to the voice acting position as "the sweetest job". I do have to wonder, though - does he eat Yellow M&Ms, or does he abstain due to his unique position as one?
