Italian sports journalist Luca Esposito has been shot and killed in the Eboli region of southern Italy, with prosecutors launching a homicide investigation.

According to local reports, Esposito's body was discovered near farmland after firefighters responded to a fire in the area.
The 53-year-old's remains were found at the scene, prompting a major investigation by authorities.
Journalist Killed as Authorities Launch Homicide Investigation
Investigators believe Esposito was killed in a shooting, with police reportedly recovering spent bullet casings near his body.
The burns sustained in the fire initially made it difficult to identify the journalist. Investigators were ultimately able to confirm his identity through his vehicle being located nearby.
Esposito was a well-known figure in Italian sports media. He worked for La Città di Salerno newspaper and television station Otto Channel.
He also ran the football news website Tuttosalernitana.com.
Authorities have not said whether his work as a journalist was connected to the killing, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Tributes Paid as Investigation Continues
An Otto Channel director paid tribute to Esposito in a statement following the news of his death.
"Luca was a valuable collaborator for us as a commentator, certainly inconvenient but never banal and above all always courageous in defending his opinions on the world of football," the statement read.
"In this difficult time, we express our deepest sympathies to the family who are experiencing such terrible grief."
The broadcaster also called for a full investigation into the killing. They describe the case as one that has caused "great public concern" and urge the authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
"At Otto Channel, we are deeply saddened also because Luca would have been one of the key commentators on our sports programs next season," the statement adds.
"Luca was extremely popular and always a talking point. A big hug to the family from the entire Otto Channel and Ottopagine team."
The European Federation of Journalists has also urged Italian authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding Esposito's death "as quickly as possible."
The organization said investigators should "establish any causal links between the crime and the victim's journalistic activities."
The Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office is leading the homicide investigation.
