On Saturday, September 8, Derek Phillips, a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band, collapsed due to the heat. The incident occurred during the season-opening college football game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and Northern Illinois Huskies.
ESPN has since reported that Phillips suffered a "sudden cardiac arrest" shortly before the band played in the halftime show. Sadly, "the damage to his brain was too severe, and we have made the heartbreaking decision to remove life support."
Phillips passed away on the morning of Tuesday, September 8.
Despite his death, the Hawkeye Marching Band was back on the field this past Saturday (September 12), where they performed in his honor. The entire band can be seen fighting back tears as they paid tribute to their late bandmate.

The University of Iowa Recently Released a Statement on the Death of Derek Phillips
Following Phillips' tragic death, the University of Iowa released a statement.
"The entire Hawkeye Marching Band family is thinking of Derek Phillips and his loved ones," the statement said. "We are grateful to his parents for providing regular updates to the students who love Derek. This is heartbreaking for everyone who cares for him. The university is in close contact and is offering support."
The band then followed up with their own statement, which noted they would be performing a tribute this weekend.
"Derek Phillips was our mellophone section leader, a beloved member of the School of Music horn studio, and the kind of friend, student, and musician that represents the very best of what it means to be a Hawkeye," the band's statement said.
Phillips' death is a tragedy. His family will undoubtedly wish for privacy as they navigate such a heartbreaking time.
