According to the New York Post, this post was just one of almost three dozen that Trump unleashed in a frenzy of posts about an hour. New Mexico is not the president's only target for a name change. He favors calling Lake Ontario Lake America, to the chagrin of Canadians. And he also wants the Gulf of Mexico rebranded as the Gulf of America.
Trump Issued a Second Post About New Mexico
In this AI-generated post, a video depicts Donald Trump walks along a rural road in New Mexico. There is a sign that says, "Welcome to New Mexico, Land of Enchantment." Trump then covers the word "Mexico" on the sign with a banner that says "America" in large red letters on a white background. The song "Y.M.C.A." by the Village People then begins playing. Trump gleefully boogies to it.
He wrote on the post, "Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA. So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!"
Some Clearly Don't "Love It"
Newsweek points out that Donald Trump does not have the "legal authority" to change the name of a state. Nevertheless, his proposal obviously irks leaders there.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham was among those who are steaming mad about Trump's idea. The Democrat wrote on Instagram, "New Mexico's name isn't up for debate - it's been ours since before the United States existed. What is up for debate? Who's showing up for working families."
She went on to slam Trump's "disastrous war in Iran." The real issues, Grisham believes, are high grocery prices, availability of affordable health care, and daunting housing costs.
Other political figures from New Mexico, per Newsweek,are bristling. They stated their disdain for Trump's initiative. They included Gregg Hull, who was mayor of Rio Rancho, Pat Woods, a state senator from New Mexico, and Senator Martin Heinrich.
