A popular infant formula has been recalled due to a toxin that could cause illness in the infants who consume it.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shared in a notice issued on Saturday, May 2, that the a2 Milk Company of Colorado issued a voluntary recall of three batches of its a2 Platinum Premium USA formula. It is for children 12 months and younger. It was sold on the company's website, Amazon, and Meijer stores.
Why Is the Formula Being Recalled?
The notice states that a toxin known as cereulide, produced by some strains of the Bacillus cereus bacterium, was found in the product. It can't be eliminated when the formula is prepared with hot water.
The toxin was discovered during testing performed in response to new guidance from New Zealand authorities.
Cereulide can make infants sick in 30 minutes. Symptoms, which include nausea and vomiting, usually develop within 6 hours. They generally pass in a day, but the FDA says that children are at great risk. Symptoms can also lead to other complications, including dehydration, which can require medical care.
What Products Are Affected by the Recall?
Thankfully, there are currently no confirmed reports of illness linked to the formula.
Consumers may have the affected product in storage. Over 63,000 31.7-ounce tins of a2 Platinum Premium infant formula 0-12 months Milk-based powder with Iron were produced, with an estimated 16,400 sold to consumers.
Here are the batch numbers and use-by dates affected by the recall:
- Batch number 2210269454 with date 7/15/2026
- Batch number 2210324609 with date 1/21/2027
- Batch number 2210321712 with date 1/15/2027
The numbers can be found at the bottom of the tins. If customers have one of these products, the FDA advises that they be thrown away or returned for a full refund.
