Independence Day Vacationers Warned of Dangerous Bacteria Levels at These Five Popular California Beaches

Lots of people tend to go to the beach for the Fourth of July. But health authorities have put out warnings about bacteria on beaches.

Do you have plans for the Fourth of July? I'd say it's as good a day as any to get yourself out of the house and explore some of America's finest places. One that comes to mind for me is the beach. Whether it's a lake or the ocean, we have some of the most beautiful in this country.

But a warning has been given to prospective beachgoers about potentially dangerous bacteria, right in time for the Fourth of July. As reported by ABC 7, authorities have shown areas across California might cause issues.

They cite "elevated bacteria levels" causing the issues, which could "increase the risk of illness."

More specifically, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has unofficially cordoned off several areas. These are:

Videos by Wide Open Country

  • Rendondo Beach: Redondo Beach Pier | 100 yards up and down the coast from the pier
  • Marina del Rey: Mother's Beach | Entire swim area
  • Topanga County: Castlerock storm drain at Topanga Country Beach | 100 yards up and down the coast from the storm drain
  • Malibu: Topanga County Beach | 100 yards up and down the coast from the lagoon
  • Santa Monica: Santa Monica Pier | 100 yards up and down the coast from the pier

Another area that has been closed is in Laguna Beach, where Orange County Health Care Agency officials had to close one quarter of a mile of beach in Thalia Beach.

Other Areas Just Re-Opened for the Fourth of July

It's not all bad news. Some other areas have also been opened rather than closed, since they came back up to state levels.

One area was Will Rogers State Beach. The Bel Air Bay Club storm drain recently had to be closed for days. Testing had found the water quality had dipped below state standards.

But that's all fixed now—the warning was lifted, and people are able to use it for the Fourth of July.

Authorities have explained that anyone seeking more information in the area should call different numbers depending on where they are

  • (800) 525-5662 for Los Angeles County
  • (714) 433-6400 is for Orange County.

We hope everyone has a great Fourth of July!
