Capitalizing on her Hawk Tuah fame, Welch launch the appropriately named Hawk Tuah (HAWK) meme coin on the Solana blockchain. She told Fortune before launch that it "is not a cash grab." However, now that the coin actually launched, buyers are saying that it is definitely a cash grab.
"We don't want to break securities laws," Welch's manager, Jonnie Forster, told Fortune. "We would say that we're almost, like, tokenizing, in a sense, Hailey's fan base."
Just 24 hours after launch, buyers started filing complaints with securities regulators. One law firm is already grabbing clients as critics have blasted the Hawk Tuah coin as a scam. At it peak market capitalization, it was $490 million. But then it plummeted more than 94% to $29.1 million.
According to Cointelegraph, 80% and 90% of Hawk Tuah coin is owned by both insider wallets as well as snipers. Welch denied selling any tokens or giving away free tokens. However, buyers are accusing her of pulling a rug pull.
Hawk Tuah Buyers Speak Out
Coinbase defines a rug pull as: " A rug pull is a type of exit scam that involves a team raising money from investors and the public by selling a token only to quietly shut down the project or suddenly disappear, stealing the raised funds and leaving 'investors' (i.e., their victims) with worthless tokens.
Rug pulls can be extensively orchestrated, with nefarious actors leveraging social media influencers and hype-generating campaigns to lure as many victims as possible."
