"I'm Incredibly Strong": Woman Whose Nose Was Surgically Removed Doesn't Let It Stop Her

Living without a nose is probably unimaginable to most people. However, one woman is sharing her experience of being minus her nose. Per This Morning, 14 years ago. Hardman's mastiff banged her in the face. That in itself would not seem alarming, but what evolved from that inadvertent mishap was. She commented, "After that my nose was just weird and it sort of blew up a little bit and I had lots of nose bleeds." In a way, that minor incident with her dog might have been a major stroke of good fortune.

Hardman Then Discovered She Has a Serious Medical Condition

Because of the bothersome state of her nose, Hardman eventually discovered that she has vasculitis. According to the Johns Hopkins Vasculitis Center, the condition can arise in various parts of the body, such as the kidneys, joints, and eyes. It causes inflammation of blood vessels to the point of "damage and dysfunction" of the affected areas.

Said Jayne Hardman, "If you don't get treated you're dead within a year. So I think she sort of alerted me that there was something going on with my nose and she saved my life." Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential.

Her Nose Actually "Sunk"

Five years later, there was no solution that could save Jayne Hardman's nose. Only a drastic answer would work. It had to be removed.

She explained, "They took off my nose that had sunk straight back into my face." People treated her unkindly, she said, asking pesky questions and being way too insensitive. "I walked around like that for about 18 months, two years. Leaving the house was incredibly difficult because every time you go out, people would stare at you. People would ask you incredibly intrusive questions, very rude questions."

Hardman underwent surgery, then got a prosthetic nose. "I just look normal again. When you've got a facial difference, it's incredibly hard to go out and face the world." She has more than one nose, she mentioned. It looks really natural and unremarkable.

What She Learned

Jayne Hardman has a terrifically buoyant attitude despite her ordeal. She discovered "that I can deal with anything, that I'm incredibly strong, that I'm a really happy, positive person."
