Initially, real human remains got mistaken for Halloween decorations in a tale so macabre that it has to be true. But that's not even the strangest part. Authorities found two sets of human remains at the home within just weeks of each other.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office confirmed they found two sets of human remains with the second being found on December 10.
"When I came and seen it I thought it was like Halloween decorations, but then I thought, 'My God, it's got to be a human head,' " Shareka Smith told ABC affiliate WTVD. Authorities found the remains just feet away from her residence. The first human remains were found on November 20 with a medical examiner analyzing the remains.
Human Remains Found Twice
Authorities found more remains on December 10.
"Patrol deputies and detectives responded and observed what appeared to be human remains in the caller's yard," the department's news release shared,. "Patrol deputies and detectives searched a wooded area adjacent to the caller's yard, which produced additional human remains."
It sounds like there's a bit of a mystery going on in North Carolina. There are still a lot of questions regarding exactly who they belonged to and what happened to them. Smith revealed that her dog Boscoe first tipped her off to the human remains.
Fast forward a few weeks, and Smith had to feel like history was repeating itself when the dog discovered more in the area. Authorities are not even sure at this point about how long they've been out there. They're not sure if there's foul play involved or not.
Although they can't be sure at this point, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office said that the remains most likely only belonged to one individual. However, they haven't completely ruled out that it could belong to more than just one person.
As for Smith, the experience has her understandably freaked out.
"Whoever it is, and their family members I give my condolences to them," Smith told WTVD. "All I know is we're living in a cold world, and we got to be safe out here."
