An enormous New Year's Eve explosion in Hawaii reportedly caused by illegal fireworks has resulted in at least four deaths "and and over 20 people hospitalized in critical and serious condition." per Hawaii News Now.

The frightening blast took place during what should have been joyous and peaceful festivities marking the start of 2025.
Per the outlet, "First responders raced to the scene around midnight at a home on Keaka Drive in the Aliamanu area. Officials said two people were pronounced dead at the scene.The death toll has since raised to at least four people and is expected to grow, according to police sources."
The Scene Was Marked By Heavy Smoke 'Billowing' Over The Neighborhood
A neighbor related what they experienced. "I heard what seemed to be a low blast and I turned my phone to see what was going on and it was a low blast and then five to 10 minutes later a lot of commotion ambulance, fire, police. It was pretty tragic what happened."
Ambulances raced to the area to help the victims. Those who were most seriously hurt were transported to "multiple Oahu trauma centers."
First Responders Were Shaken And Horrified By What They Saw, Said It Resembled A Wartime Scene
The force of the blast must have been tremendous. Remarks by people who saw the terrible aftermath clearly indicate that. Per the outlet, "'Just very very sad — nothing I have ever seen in EMS,' said Honolulu EMS Director Jim Ireland. 'Some of the folks who were here who have been to war, who have been in combat, said it reminded them of things they have seen in combat.'"
People Sustained Gruesome Injuries
One first responder characterized the injuries they saw, via Hawaii News Now. "'So similar to what you would see to an explosion or a bomb right? So you are seeing possible limbs missing people being hit with shrapnel,' said Sunny Johnson, Honolulu EMS paramedic supervisor on duty."
Although people are warned not to use fireworks themselves because of the danger. some disregard those cautionary messages. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said in a statement that citizens using fireworks was "absurd and unacceptable."
