If you are a pickle-loving patriot, then this DIY American Flag luminary project has your name written all over it. Thanks to instructions from Keep Calm and Decorate, old pickle jars can easily be transformed into these American lanterns with only a few simple materials. This cheap and easy craft is perfect for those in need of some patriotic lighting just in time for summer.
To start this project, all you need is small American flags, mod podge and jars. The first step is to remove any label from your jar and clean the glass surface. Labels should easily wash off with warm water and dish soap.
After you've prepared the jars, remove the flags from the wooden sticks and be careful to not rip the flags as you remove the staples. Then, flatten the flags. The original blog posts suggests doing so by placing the jars on top of the flags.
Adhere the flags to the jars using roll on tape. After you tape the flag onto the jar, apply a few coats of mod podge.
For an extra touch of country charm, twine can be added around the lid of the jar after the glue dries.
Last but not least, add a tea light candle into your jar. Because of the fact that the candle is shielded from any wind, these make perfect outdoor light fixtures.
Set them on a back porch, staircase or walkway to create a pleasant outdoor ambiance. These luminaries make great centerpieces on tables (indoor or outdoor!) as well. While they are wonderfully appropriate for summer and the fourth of July, they can be displayed year-round. After all, the American flag never goes out of season.
