According to a press release by the

Volusia Sheriff's Office, the incident happened near the Cardinal Drive beach ramp at around 10:43 AM on Saturday. A man from Ocala, 33, was reportedly sunbathing before a Jeep Wrangler ran him over. The Jeep driver, a 61-year-old woman from Ormond Beach, allegedly drove 'outside the travel lanes' to secure a parking spot.

Deputies cited the woman for careless driving. The press release explains that she fully cooperated with law enforcement and remained on the scene throughout. Police say she displayed no signs of impairment, and the incident is under investigation.

The Sheriff's Office says that the man suffered damage to his thigh and arm, but a report by WESH 2 shows the full extent of his injuries. The outlet also reveals his identity as Coleson Janey. In an interview from his hospital bed, Janey explains, "I guess I'd maybe fallen asleep for a little bit. And I woke up to a tire coming over my head."

The Beachgoer Suffered More Than Just A Head Injury

Janey is battered and bruised but also has a few broken bones. He told WESH 2 that the collision broke his forearm in two places. His femur was also broken. "It's like I had two brains," he said. "One brain was just screaming and just thinking how much pain I was in. And the other brain was kinda, being more rational, like okay, what's broken? What's moving?"

Janey explains that he looked over at his arm, and it looked flattened. His leg also appeared mangled. Despite his injuries, Janey bravely told the interviewer, "I'm just happy to be alive."

You may think the incident in Ormond Beach would be a unique case. However, almost exactly the same thing happened on Daytona Beach, just miles up the coastline in February. A Chevrolet Colorado reportedly pulled out of its parking spot, but the driver didn't notice a 71-year-old woman on a beach chair nearby.

The Chevrolet reportedly struck the woman with its rear right wheel and drove over her head. She miraculously survived, and authorities took her to Halifax Medical Center.
