The Behind Enemy Lines actor recently released a new book titled Bloodlines. In the memoir, he reveals some intricate details about his personal life. In one excerpt from the book, Manganiello recalls a time when Vergara made the call for doctors to remove his infected large intestine while he was undergoing abdominal surgery.
Manganiello Credits Vergara With Saving His Life
"While I was under, they called Sofía, who, as my next of kin, had to choose what she thought I would want the doctors to do," he writes in the memoir (via Entertainment Weekly). "She made the brutal but lifesaving decision to allow my entire large intestine to be removed and for a hole to be cut into my abdomen to divert my small intestine."
He also says the decision ultimately saved his life.
"The surgery had saved my life but had left me with an ostomy bag for an indefinite amount of time, possibly forever," he wrote.
Vergara and Manganiello finalized their divorce in July 2023 after being married for 8 years. In a January 2024 interview with Anna Rumer of PopCulture.com, Vergara dished on what ultimately led to their split. The Modern Family alum revealed that the main reason for the divorce was that Manganiello wanted to have kids. She did not.
"My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids, and I didn't want to be an old mom," Vergara told Rumer. "I feel it's not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that's not for me anymore."
She also added:
"I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I'm ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children. I'm almost in menopause; it's the natural way of things."
