The 74-year-old actor discussed his family's connection to the wilderness lifestyle during an appearance on the Table Manners podcast with his son, Wyatt.
When Kurt was asked if he was sentimental about animals, he said, "Well, I thank them for their service."
Kurt Russell Honors Animals
Kurt, who is an avid hunter, then clarified his comments.
"By the way, there's no pleasure in the taking of life," he explained. "There's great pleasure and honor in taking an animal that feeds you. And I respect that and honor that, and it means a big deal to me. And you know, I make no apologies."
Wyatt then talked about how hunting connects him to the food he eats.
"One of the things that we've really forgot, especially my children growing up - you see those things run through your backyard, and you see all kinds of animals, and they're majestic," he said.
He then added, "But then you go to the grocery store, and it's like 90% of the people are just in a pack. They don't know. They have no connection to food at all. And so it's very nice. You know, we were raised with it to know that thing that you took is gonna be your dinner meal."
Kurt Russell Says Hunting Isn't "For Everybody"
This week, Kurt enters the Taylor Sheridan universe as part of the new Paramount+ drama The Madison. In the promos, he is seen fly fishing, echoing his passion for the outdoors.
He shared with podcast hosts Jessie Ware and her mother, Lennie, that the wilderness lifestyle works for his family. However, he admitted that it's not for everyone.
"It's not something I push on anybody," Russell said. "I mean, it's not for everybody, but I like bringing down my own meat. I grew up in that family."
Kurt has also been pretty hands-on as a parent. When his son, Oliver Hudson, appeared on The Jimmy Kimmel Show back in 2019, he shared the unusual punishment he received after he was arrested for paintballing some adults on Halloween.
"My punishment was to shoot up my Honda Prelude with blue leather interior. I had to shoot up my car and dent it up, and ride around in it for the rest of my existence. He has this philosophy where I knew what I did was wrong, so why ground me? Just destroy your car, and you will have to drive it for as long as you have this car."
