Hollywood Actor Shares Reality of Living Off the Grid

Following a fruitful stint in Hollywood, which included a role in the live-action Transformers series and several notable voice-acting roles, Josh Duhamel says he finds peace within his "doomsday cabin" in Minnesota.

"What I think I love the most about it is I just get out there, and my heart rate drops about 25 percent," Duhamel said of living in Minnesota instead of Hollywood.

Duhamel lived in Los Angeles for nearly three decades. Now, he primarily resides in his lavish, solar-powered cabin in Minnesota. The 52-year-old actor previously joked that the 50-acre residence is "72 percent" zombie-proof. If need be, the Daytime Emmy Award winner is equipped to ward off AI robots, too.

"Every year, I get a little bit more fully prepped," Duhamel told Fox News Digital. "But that's part of the fun. The journey of figuring it out. Seeing what the latest and greatest is.

"I'm less afraid of zombies and more afraid of AI robots now. I don't know if we're ever gonna fully be able to, you know, protect ourselves from what's coming. But at least I can hopefully turn off all devices and just sort of shut ourselves off from the world if we need to."

Duhamel said that the lakeside home supplies its own water, electricity, and heat.

High-energy appliances and heating are fueled by solar energy. For water distribution, Duhamel noted that each cabin is connected to a well.

"For the first few years, there was no water," he said. "We had electricity in the little cabin — the second one — but no water," he said.

"We had to build wells. Each one of the cabins has a well."

Duhamel noted that withdrawing from Hollywood and into the countryside has kept him grounded.

"I've always stayed very close to my roots," Duhamel said. "I've got a very tight-knit group of friends that have been very close to me forever. So, I've leaned on them a lot just to keep me in check throughout the years."
