Afrika Bambaataa has died at the age of 67. The rapper and DJ passed away due to complications from cancer, TMZ has reported. He was instrumental in the early foundations of Hip Hop.

"Today, we acknowledge the transition of a foundational architect of Hip Hop culture, Afrika Bambaataa," the Hip Hop alliance wrote in a statement on Instagram. "As the founder of the Universal Zulu Nation, Afrika Bambaataa helped shape the early identity of Hip Hop as a global movement rooted in peace, unity, love, and having fun."
The statement continued by explaining Afrika Bambaataa's influence on the early Hip Hop scene, and how it helped shape the genre and the culture.
"Through his music, leadership, and influence, he contributed to the foundation of Hip Hop's core principles, inspiring generations of MCs, DJs, breakers, and cultural leaders," the statement continued. "His imprint on Hip Hop history is undeniable."
However, Afrika Bambaataa's life wasn't without controversy. In recent years, he was accused of sexual assault by multiple men. The incidents allegedly took place in the 80s and 90s. According to TMZ, Afrika Bambaataa was forced to pay a settlement in 2025. A judge ruled a default on a sex trafficking accusation, following a no-show from the Hip Hop star.
"At the same time, we recognize that his legacy is complex and has been the subject of serious conversations within our community," the statement recognized.
Afrika Bambaataa Is Still a Popular Artist to This Day
Old-school Hip Hop is still alive and well. Millions of fans tune into the earlier works in the genre every day. Therefore, it's no surprise that Afrika Bambaataa is drawing over 600,000 monthly streams on Spotify.
"Planet Rock" is his most-streamed song, holding 37.8 million all-time listens on the platform. "Looking For The Perfect Beat" is also highly popular, with 8.6 million streams. "Afrika Shox" is another track with millions of hits, boasting more than 5.1 million.
There's no denying the impact Afrika Bambaataa had on Hip Hop. His music is withstanding the test of time, and his influence can be heard in new songs around the world.
"Today, we extend our condolences to all who were impacted by his life, his work, and his presence," the statement said.
No details have been released regarding his impending funeral. That information will likely remain private, for close friends and family.
