Hear Kacey Musgraves' New Disco-Country Song 'High Horse'

During an appearance on Zane Lowe's World Record on Apple Music's Beats 1, Kacey Musgraves premiered "High Horse" from her forthcoming album Golden Hour (out March 30). Like "Butterflies" and "Space Cowboy" before it, "High Horse" takes Musgraves' sound in a new direction while still remembering her country roots. This time, Musgraves created one fantastic disco-country jam and maybe the most danceable country song you'll hear all year.

"High Horse" blends a '70s dance beat with unmistakably country and western imagery.

"I bet you think your John Wayne," Musgraves sings. "Showing up and shootin' down everybody." The song includes a guitar riff straight out of a Spaghetti Western—if the Spaghetti Western were set inside of Studio 54.

The track may remind fans of another pop-inspired Musgraves song, the unreleased  "Velvet Elvis."

In her interview with Zane Lowe, Musgraves said the song was inspired by her love for the Bee Gees.

"I mean first of all I was on a huge Bee Gees kick whenever I was making this album and I was intrigued by the thought of a world where Bee Gees kind of meets country music," Musgraves told Lowe. "These days I only see music really as falling into two genres, good or bad. You won't find someone on this earth that loves country music more than me but that also doesn't define all my musical tastes. I was inspired by a thought of a world where all these ideas could come together musically and still translate just as good songs if I sat down and played them on my guitar."

Musgraves also discussed pop artists' increasing appreciation for country music.

"I think the new record is something that country people will have something to hold onto and I think people that don't know anything or care about country music will like it as well, hopefully. It's been awesome to see kind of shift towards appreciation in pop music for country and western style," Musgraves added. "I mean with Kesha, Miley — I mean even in the clothes that they wear, the fringe the rhinestones. I've been wearing that for since I was 12 years old and it genuinely really inspires me. So it's cool to see other genres appreciating this really historic genre."

Musgraves will join Harry Styles on tour this May. She'll also kick off her Oh What a World Tour this fall in Amersterdam.
