Whether you're into banana splits, birthday cake, milkshakes, soft serve, ice cream cones, or just plain great ice cream, most people have opinions about this sweet dairy treat. Today I learned that the company that makes Hershey's Ice Cream is, in fact, not the same company that makes Hershey's Chocolate. The names are kind of a wild coincidence, especially considering both companies were founded in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in the same year. So, what makes Hershey's Ice Cream different?
Hershey's Ice Cream Story
Hershey's Ice Cream, also known as Hershey Creamery Co, is headquartered in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. They make ice cream products like ice cream, sorbet, sherbet, frozen yogurt, and other frozen desserts like smoothies.
The company was founded by Jacob Hershey and four of his brothers in 1894 and taken over by the Holder family in the 1920s. It has no connection to the Hershey Company, and they've dealt with multiple lawsuits over trademark issues over the years.
What Do They Sell?
The company's website, hersheyicecream.com, lists both products and a very important disclaimer noting that they are "not affiliated with Hershey's Chocolate."
Their products include hand-dipped ice cream in ice cream flavors like Chocolate Moose Tracks, Peanut Butter Twist, Cookies 'n Cream, Cotton Candy, Green Mint Chip, Salty Caramel Truffle, Maple Walnut, Key Lime Pie, and many more.
They also have frozen yogurt in flavors like No Fat Peach and Low Fat Coffee Fudge Almond. Some of their ultra-premium ice cream flavors include Cappuccino Crunch, Better Brownie Batter, Midnight Caramel River, Nuts About Pecans, and Caramel Cheesecake Cookie Monster, among many others.
The company also offers novelty items like ice cream sandwiches, ice cream bars, and Italian Ice. They have dessert cups in flavors like Chocolate Sundae and Dulce de Leche, and waffle cones in varieties like Super Cookies & Cream Cone and P.Nutty Cone.
Hershey's Ice Cream also sells ice cream cakes, as well as quarts and pints of ice cream to stick in your freezer and enjoy whenever you want a late-night snack! It really seems like the ice cream company — no relation to the chocolate company! — has something for everyone.
